From Bedlam to Blueprint

YourFinestOut was not born in a boardroom, a university laboratory or an entrepreneurial incubator. It emerged during one of the most turbulent and painful periods of its founder's life.

In the spring of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, Falk was reverse-engineering smart-city surveillance infrastructure. He began raising concerns about possible function creep: technologies extending beyond their stated purposes into military surveillance, signals intelligence and covert operations involving digital twins and facial recognition in the town.

Falk describes this work as whistleblowing: raising questions about surveillance, accountability and the boundaries of technologies already embedded in everyday life.

At the same time, he recalls an unexplained suspension from his work supporting people with autism, apparent shadowbanning across digital platforms and chilling prompts about what should happen to his data when he could no longer use it. The suspension came without comment. The convergence of these events left Falk searching for answers that no one had given him.

He says he was subsequently escorted to a psychiatric research facility, where he faced panels of masked doctors. Falk brought technical questions about surveillance and accountability into that room. He recalls the discussion shifting away from those questions and towards a psychiatric assessment, without the substantive answers he had sought.

During triage, Falk recalls hearing audio feedback — rundgång. He asked whether he should switch off his phone. One doctor told him that they could not hear anything. For Falk, the feedback raised an immediate question: were microphones picking up his explanations?

Falk says he later learned that the facility was experimenting with natural-language-processing systems that spring, with the aim of making triage more efficient in anticipation of increased demand for psychiatric care during COVID-19. He wanted to know whether those systems had played a role in his assessment.

Falk says he was later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He came to suspect that an NLP system trained on a historical corpus of medical records might have influenced that assessment. In reflecting on his experience, he drew a comparison with what he understood as the Soviet-era use of “sluggish schizophrenia” to discredit political dissenters. The question of whether an NLP system influenced his diagnosis remains unanswered.

He remembers being detained with no clear end in sight, no visitors allowed and no permission to leave his room. He describes the experience as solitary confinement: masked personnel bringing food on a tray, while he remained unable to understand or influence the decisions governing his life.

Banged up in Bedlam.

In that isolation, Falk wondered whether he had found himself downstream from an opaque structure. He questioned whether a system such as Palantir might have classified him as a threat. He had no access to the processes that could answer that question.

How had his workplace learned about his investigations? What connected the suspension, the platform restrictions and the decisions made in triage? Falk had no satisfactory answers.

Night after night, Falk applied the same analytical persistence to his circumstances that he had brought to his investigations. He searched for a way forward. He had spent years supporting other people; now he could barely exercise control over his own circumstances. It was there that he decided he had to find a way forward.

The Birth of YourFinestOut

Simon Falk — The Birth of YourFinestOut

In an attempt to recover his digital identity, which had seemingly been wiped from platforms, Falk kept encountering a chilling daily prompt:

“What do you want to happen to your data when you can no longer use it?”

Under those circumstances, it felt like a death sentence.

He was alive, yet confronted with a question that seemed to anticipate his disappearance.

Determined to establish a new digital identity, he turned to Microsoft to register a new email address.

And there he encountered a word that caught his attention.

Outlook.

He stopped to consider the word.

Outlook.

It felt exactly like what he was reaching out for.

A new outlook on life. Something beyond the confinement, the uncertainty and the seemingly endless questions surrounding his circumstances.

Inspired by Mike Oldfield’s song Five Miles Out, he carefully typed:

YourFinestOut@Outlook.com

And it turned green.

The address was available.

Falk was so happy.

Such a small thing, perhaps, to anyone looking from the outside. But to him, in that moment, it meant something extraordinary.

He had found a name that captured what he wanted to do with whatever life lay ahead of him.

From there on, Falk decided to showcase his absolute finest out to the world and see where that would take him.

That was the beginning of YourFinestOut.

Thank you for all the doubts, and for all the questioning
For all the loneliness and for all the suffering
For all the emptiness, and the scars it left inside
It inspired in me, an impetus to fight
For the conviction, for the purpose found along
For the strength and courage, that in me I've never known
And if it seems to you, that my words are undeserved
I write this in gratitude for whatever good it serves

Discovering His Finest Out

Over the six years that followed, Falk began discovering something about himself that he had never fully understood before.

His strengths in interdisciplinary thought, pattern recognition and systems architecture became increasingly clear. He connected ideas across disciplines and turned those connections into architectural concepts.

What had begun as a simple promise to showcase his absolute finest out to the world became an extraordinary journey of self-discovery.

Ideas began connecting across disciplines, patterns emerged where he had previously seen fragments, and questions he had carried for much of his life began finding their place within increasingly elaborate architectures.

He had set out to discover what he might become.

What surprised him most was what he could create.

A Life Rich in the Unconventional

Looking back, perhaps the foundations had been laid long before Falk ever knew what systems architecture was.

His life has always been rich in unconventionality.

Growing up amidst the organic, natural beauty of Zambia and Kenya, Falk was surrounded by landscapes where complexity and harmony existed without the apparent need for straight lines or carefully measured boundaries.

Nature had its own architecture. Its own patterns, rhythms and relationships.

When he later came to Sweden, he discovered an entirely different kind of beauty.

He became fascinated by its cleanliness, orderliness and precision.

He could find himself staring at something as seemingly insignificant as the dots on a whiteboard, or the perfectly laid bricks of a building, marvelling at their systemic beauty.

Where others might have seen an ordinary wall, he saw relationships between individual elements and the greater structure they formed.

Where others saw repetition, he found harmony.

The contrast between the organic complexity of his African childhood and the geometric orderliness he encountered in Sweden captivated his imagination.

He did not yet have the vocabulary to explain why.

Little did he know that, some three decades later, this fascination with patterns, relationships and the structures underlying the world around him would become invaluable in his work as a systems architect.

He had been studying patterns and relationships long before he gave that practice a name: systems architecture.

And perhaps the most unconventional part of his journey was discovering that what had always seemed like an unusual way of looking at the world could become the very foundation of what he would one day create.

From Patterns to Architecture

Today, those lifelong fascinations find expression in the Metaphorically Significant™ FrameWork and the development of Inter Dimensional Computation | IDC™.

Through these undertakings, Falk explores how computational systems might incorporate ethics, contextual reasoning, temporal relationships and transparency into the very foundations of their architecture.

Not simply asking what a machine is capable of computing, but how it arrives at its conclusions, which relationships it considers, what boundaries govern its actions and how those decisions might be understood by the people affected by them.

These are ambitious questions, and the architectures emerging from them remain subject to the necessary work of implementation, experimentation and validation.

Yet the underlying motivation remains remarkably close to the questions that occupied Falk during those long nights in 2020.

How do we know that what we know is true?

How can we distinguish observation from interpretation?

And what happens to human dignity when decisions affecting our lives are made within systems we cannot see, question or understand?

Falk does not claim to have resolved every question surrounding what happened to him.

But he can show what has grown from his determination to find a way forward.

What began with a new email address has developed into a portfolio of architectural concepts, technological initiatives and an expanding invitation for others to participate in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.

YourFinestOut

YourFinestOut remains, at its heart, a promise Falk made to himself.

To explore the limits of his imagination.

To question what others may take for granted.

To recognize beauty in the patterns and relationships surrounding us.

And to see just how far a person might travel by continually striving to bring their finest out into the world.

Falk spent much of his life trying to understand the world as it is.

Today, he devotes himself to imagining — and engineering — what it could become.
